So... who is Libby Austin?
I am a student in the Certificate in Technology in Distance Education and E-learning program at University of Maryland University College. I work as a freelance video producer and production support staff, doing everything from corporate events to independent documentaries.
This course of study in Distance Education interests me for a variety of reasons. I've worked in the education field as a video producer for many years, and I enjoy creating educational media. The brain science aspect of learning and course design is also very interesting to me, as is the idea of teaching to multiple intelligences and abilities. I 've also taught video production at the college level, and done some course design around that, so I'd like to learn more about how to enhance my teaching style. A course designer or instructional designer is always learning, because the work involves creating ways to help others learn a particular subject. For me, that, too, is a compelling aspect of the job.
In my OMDE 601 course, I'd like to delve into theories of learning and instruction, course design issues, and ways to use emerging technologies for instruction.
Activities that feed my soul are playing music with friends, cooking imaginatively and spending time with my husband and eleven year old son. Being around mountain streams and rivers helps me unwind, and I enjoy canoeing, bicycling and being in the woods. I enjoy travelling and would love to go to Asia, Australia, and South and Central America, as well as back to Europe.
Finding time for my studies is always challenging, but doing the readings and interacting with my classmates and professors is very rewarding. I'm looking forward to the new professional opportunities that will come about as I move through the Certificate in Technology in Distance Education and E-learning.
